Irish Fighter Criticizes Illegal Immigration During Saint Patrick's Day Visit

Conor McGregor, the Irish MMA fighter who has been found liable for sexual assault, met with former President Donald Trump during a Saint Patrick's Day visit on Monday. During the meeting, McGregor launched into a strong criticism of illegal immigration in Ireland. "Ireland is on the brink of losing its Irishness," McGregor said during his appearance in the White House briefing room, where he was joined by Trump's press secretary, Karoline Leavitt. "The illegal immigration racket is ravaging the country," McGregor added, wearing a green business suit to mark the holiday.

Trump later hosted McGregor in the Oval Office, where the 36-year-old fighter, a former UFC star, posed for photos with the president and tech mogul Elon Musk, a long-time Trump supporter. Musk, who has shown support for McGregor in the past, has also voiced backing for anti-immigration political movements in Europe.

"Your work ethic is inspiring," McGregor told Trump, with footage shared by the president's aide. Trump responded, "Yours is too, you're fantastic."

McGregor had previously mentioned he would be "listening" to Trump on immigration, a key issue for the former president as he looks to intensify efforts to deport undocumented individuals. "We couldn’t think of a better guest to have with us on Saint Patrick's Day," said Leavitt.

McGregor’s comments sparked immediate backlash from Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, who recently met with Trump at the White House. "Conor McGregor’s remarks are wrong and do not reflect the spirit of Saint Patrick's Day or the views of the people of Ireland," Martin posted on X (formerly Twitter).

McGregor, who is known for his provocative and controversial statements, has faced legal issues in the past. In November 2024, an Irish court ordered him to pay damages to a woman who accused him of sexual assault in 2018, a claim McGregor denied, asserting the encounter was consensual. McGregor is also facing a sexual assault lawsuit in the U.S. following an incident at an NBA game in 2023.

Trump, who was also embroiled in legal battles, was found guilty by a New York jury in 2023 of sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll, resulting in a $5 million award for Carroll. Trump denied the allegations and appealed the verdict, which was upheld in December 2024.
