Exclusive: Jaime King's Ex-Husband Granted Primary Custody of Sons Amid "Strung Out" Allegations
Kyle Newman, Jaime King’s ex-husband, has been awarded primary custody of their two sons after accusing her of being neglectful and "strung out" while caring for the children, In Touch can exclusively reveal.
According to court documents obtained by In Touch, Jaime and Kyle participated in a mediation session on March 7 as part of their ongoing divorce battle.
The couple, married from 2007 to 2020, share two sons, James Knight and Leo Thames. The newly established custody agreement, reached at Los Angeles Superior Court's Dependency Court, grants Kyle primary custody, with joint legal custody shared between the two parents. Jaime will have supervised visitation three times a week.
As per the agreement, Jaime will spend two hours with the children on two separate days, and four hours on the third day. Nine people have been designated as approved supervisors for these visitations, although Kyle has expressed concerns over one of the potential supervisors—Jaime's partner, Austin Sosa—but indicated he would reconsider. Supervision will remain in place until a future court order permits unsupervised visitation. Jaime will also be allowed to have FaceTime calls with the children on non-visitation days for no longer than 20 minutes.
The agreement further stipulates that Jaime's visitation rights are contingent upon her completion of a six-month drug and alcohol rehabilitation program, including weekly drug tests, aftercare, and a 12-step program. Additionally, she must complete a 26-week parenting program and attend counseling.
Kyle had previously filed for a restraining order and sought sole custody, alleging that Jaime’s substance abuse and emotional neglect placed their children in danger. In his petition, Kyle detailed an incident on October 17, 2024, when his sons reportedly called him, asking to be picked up from Jaime's home. He recounted arriving at Jaime’s residence and finding her "strung out" and appearing intoxicated, surrounded by two men.
While Kyle acknowledged that Jaime loves their children and that he hopes she receives help, he stated that he could not allow them to remain in an unsafe environment. He also cited previous court sanctions against Jaime for not adhering to custody agreements, such as remaining sober when the children are in her care.
Jaime, through her attorney, denied the allegations. Her lawyer, Diana D. Hagopian, told In Touch, “Mr. Newman’s previous ex parte requests have been entirely denied by the court. The accusations against Jaime are false and designed to harm her reputation and gain media attention.”
Diana also expressed concern about Kyle’s attempts to use the court to make unfounded claims, saying, “Jaime is focused on a peaceful co-parenting process and prioritizes the health and well-being of their children above all else.”
Kyle’s attorney, Garry Gekht, reiterated that Kyle’s primary goal is for Jaime to get the help she needs so that she can safely parent their children and requested privacy for the sake of the kids.
