'One Battle After Another' Teaser: Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Thomas Anderson Unite for Action-Packed First Footage

Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled the first teaser for One Battle After Another, the latest film from writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Sean Penn. This marks Anderson’s first film since the critical success of Licorice Pizza in 2021, and it is set for release in theaters on September 26.

The brief teaser, released ahead of a full trailer next week, showcases intense action with characters firing guns in a field. Taylor’s character, who is pregnant, shoots a rifle as DiCaprio casually observes while sipping a drink. The teaser takes a dramatic turn as the baby is born in the next scene, accompanied by a narrator’s question, “What are you gonna do about this baby?” The scene cuts to the now-grown child firing a rifle, mirroring her mother’s actions.

“Just when you think you got a handle on things,” a voice says. DiCaprio, now older with a goatee, peers through the scope of a gun, while Penn’s character drags a screaming woman down an alleyway.

Before the teaser was revealed, little was known about the film’s plot beyond it being set in a contemporary setting and featuring an ensemble cast. Speculation about the movie’s budget had already begun, with reports suggesting it could be Anderson’s most expensive film yet. Early estimates suggested One Battle After Another could cost over $100 million, with some sources now placing the budget at $140 million.

Anderson’s previous film, Licorice Pizza, though praised by critics, struggled at the box office, failing to recoup its $40 million budget, leading to significant losses. One Battle After Another also reunites Anderson with Licorice Pizza breakout star Alana Haim. Other cast members include Benicio del Toro, Wood Harris, Shayna McHayle, and Chase Infiniti.

Principal photography began under the working title BC Project in January 2024, with most filming taking place in California, a regular setting for Anderson’s films. Additional scenes were shot in El Paso, Texas. The film was captured on 35mm film using VistaVision cameras.

One Battle After Another also marks the sixth collaboration between Anderson and composer Johnny Greenwood and the fifth with first assistant director Adam Somner, who tragically passed away in November 2024.
