GOP Leaders Urge Sen. Eichorn to Resign After Arrest for Allegedly Soliciting a Minor

Minnesota State Sen. Justin Eichorn, R-Grand Rapids, was arrested on Monday evening in Bloomington on suspicion of soliciting a minor for prostitution.

Bloomington police reported that Eichorn was arrested near the 8300 block of Normandale Boulevard around 6 p.m. He was initially booked at the Bloomington city jail before being transferred to Hennepin County Jail early Tuesday evening.

According to the Bloomington Police Department, a detective had been in communication with Eichorn, who believed he was speaking with a 16-year-old female. He then arranged to meet her on Monday and was arrested without incident outside his vehicle by uniformed officers.

In the wake of the arrest, Minnesota Senate Republicans, alongside Republican Speaker of the House Lisa Demuth, called for Eichorn to resign from his seat.

Eichorn, 40, is listed as an entrepreneur in his Senate biography, where he also mentions being married with four children. He was first elected to the Senate in 2016.

While MPR News typically refrains from naming suspects until formal charges are filed, the decision was made to identify Eichorn due to his position as a public official. He has not yet been formally charged.

A range of political figures, including both Republicans and Democrats, swiftly called for Eichorn's resignation following the arrest.

Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, DFL-St. Paul, expressed concern over the allegations, stating, “The felony allegation against Senator Eichorn is deeply disturbing, and raises serious questions that will need to be answered by the court, as well as his caucus and constituents.”

A statement from the Senate Republican Caucus called the allegations “shocking” and urged Eichorn to step down, saying, “This alleged conduct demands an immediate resignation… Justin has a difficult road ahead and he needs to focus on his family.”

House Speaker Lisa Demuth, R-Cold Spring, also joined in calling for Eichorn's resignation, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations and the need for legislators to meet higher standards, though she noted that Eichorn was entitled to due process.

In addition to representing his north-central Senate district, Eichorn serves on the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Advisory Board.

Eichorn's arrest occurred just hours after he and four other Republican senators introduced legislation to officially designate “Trump Derangement Syndrome” as a mental illness.

The Minnesota Senate has faced similar challenges in dealing with members arrested for serious offenses. Last year, DFL Sen. Nicole Mitchell was charged with burglary after being caught in the basement of a relative’s home with a flashlight and crowbar. Despite calls for her resignation from both parties, Mitchell has resisted stepping down, and the ethics proceedings against her are currently on hold until her criminal case concludes. Mitchell is set to stand trial after the legislative session.
