10 Major Revelations in the Newly Released JFK Files: Did Lee Harvey Oswald Act Alone?

The latest release of classified documents about JFK's assassination has sparked fresh debate about the lone gunman theory. Evidence suggesting the possible involvement of a second shooter, along with insights from the KGB, raises new questions about Oswald's role.

The Trump administration has declassified tens of thousands of documents regarding the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, shedding new light on the event. These 80,000 pages of previously restricted material are being released without redactions, as confirmed by the office of Tulsi Gabbard, the U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI).

These documents are available for download on the U.S. National Archives website.

Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas. As his motorcade completed its route, shots were fired from the Texas School Book Depository building.

Here are some of the most significant findings from the newly released files about Kennedy's assassination:

Did Lee Harvey Oswald Act Alone?

A year after the assassination, the Warren Commission, formed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, concluded that Oswald acted alone and found no evidence of a conspiracy. However, the new files—detailing ballistic reports and witness accounts—challenge this conclusion. The documents suggest that a shot may have been fired from the grassy knoll, ahead of Kennedy’s motorcade, casting doubt on the lone-gunman theory.

The KGB’s Role:

Among the newly released files is a memo from the CIA’s St. Petersburg station from November 1991, reporting that a CIA official befriended a U.S. professor who revealed that a KGB officer had reviewed "five thick volumes" on Oswald. The KGB officer believed Oswald was never an agent under KGB control.

The KGB, the Soviet Union's primary intelligence and security agency, was active from 1954 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

A suppressed statement from a Dallas bystander was reportedly silenced by government agents. The KGB official noted that while Oswald was difficult to control, they closely monitored his actions while he was in the Soviet Union. The file also revealed that Oswald was a poor shot during target practice in the USSR.

CIA Involvement:

A recently declassified memo from November 1963 expressed alarm within the CIA over Oswald’s activities. The memo highlighted his visits to the Soviet and Cuban embassies in Mexico City just weeks before the assassination. These details provide further context into the intelligence operations at the time.

Operation Mongoose:

The release also provides additional information about "Operation Mongoose," a covert CIA operation against Fidel Castro’s Cuban regime, authorized by JFK. This operation underscores the extent to which Cold War tensions were entangled with Kennedy’s presidency.

Trump's Commitment to Transparency:

The release of these JFK files is part of President Donald Trump’s commitment to transparency, a promise he made upon taking office. Tulsi Gabbard, the U.S. Director of National Intelligence, emphasized that this marks a "new era of maximum transparency" as the documents become publicly accessible.
