Aaron Paul's New Sci-Fi Horror Film Ash Receives Strong Rotten Tomatoes Score

Aaron Paul's latest film, Ash, recently premiered at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, and it has quickly become a favorite among critics. With positive early reviews, the movie has earned one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores of Paul's career.

Currently, Ash holds a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, placing it alongside some of Paul's most acclaimed films, such as Eye in the Sky (95%), El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (92%), and American Woman (89%). The movie, which also stars Eiza González (3 Body Problem, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare), blends science fiction and psychological thriller elements, and has been praised for its acting, storytelling, and visuals.

Critic Reactions to Ash

"Ash feels outside of time," said Sharai Bohannon from Horror Press. "It's futuristic yet deeply influenced by the sci-fi horror classics, with nods to John Carpenter’s The Thing and Ridley Scott’s Alien."

Peter Debruge of Variety praised the film’s “razor-sharp visuals” that leave a lasting impression: "The movie’s visuals leave scratch marks on the back of your eyeballs, liable to return in subsequent dreams... Check your brain, and you’ll be just fine."

Despite some criticisms for its limited locations and conventional script, Inverse's Hoai-Tran Bui noted the film’s “breathtakingly otherworldly visuals” and “Lovecraftian dread,” calling it an intriguing addition to the cosmic horror genre.

Praise for Eiza González

Glenn Garner of Deadline lauded González’s performance, calling her "Lotus’s Ripley." He commended her portrayal of a “terrified but impassioned” character, with standout fight sequences and emotional depth.

Plot and Cast

Written by Jonni Remmler, Ash is set on a distant planet, where González plays an astronaut who wakes up to find her crew dead and no memory of what happened. When a man (Aaron Paul) arrives claiming to be there to rescue her, she must decide whether she can trust him. The film also stars Iko Uwais, Beulah Koale, Kate Elliott, and Flying Lotus.

In discussing his involvement in the project, Paul shared, "When I first met with Flying Lotus, he showed me some visuals that blew me away—costume designs and the world he wanted to create. The script was such a fun ride, and I’ve been a fan of his music for a while. On set, he even DJed between takes to set the vibe—it was amazing."
